Guinea: Supply of steel sleepers and rail to CBG and RUSAL

Guinea is currently the 5th largest producer of bauxite in the world. With around 50% of the world’s reserves, the bauxite and alumina industry occupies a prominent place in the Guinean economy.

The current annual production of around 15Mt is expected to rise to more than 50Mt in the next 5 to 10 years. In the BOKE region, CBG (Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée) has been mining the Sangarédi deposit for many years. New concessions have been granted to GAC (Guinea Alu ….) and to RUSAL, which already operates a bauxite mine and an alumina refinery in the Fria region.

The 3 companies have signed an agreement to jointly operate the 120 km main railway line. As a result of the main track upgrading projects and the new railway junctions to be created, the year 2017 was rich in investments in the track.

CIM and its partner BRITISH STEEL have to so far delivered to CBG: 54,000 type 436 and 300 steel sleepers, 730 t of 136RE Premium MHH rail (with heat treatment of the head achieving exceptional wear resistance), as well as 17,000 type 436 steel sleepers to RUSAL.

30 000 type 202 steel sleepers are currently being delivered for the project to rehabilitate the metre gauge track used by RUSAL.
